Cathryne Kulick Loos was born in St. Louis, Missouri. She always wanted to be an artist, but given the responsibilities of raising two children, Cathy chose to work in the business world. For 15 years she worked for the Federal Reserve System (St. Louis and Miami) as a bank examiner. In 1996, Cathy took early retirement from the Federal Reserve to become a professional artist. She earned a Master of Fine Art from Fontbonne University (2002), St. Louis, Missouri.

Cathryne Loos paintingCathy is an imaginative artist, who loves to paint expressively. Her work is usually considered quite colorful, while her style is often loosely realistic with an abstract presence. Cathy’s main goal is to translate impressions of the world that she sees into beautiful and thought provoking paintings. Her painting style is built on traditional painting techniques coupled with contemporary painting methods. Her painting professors at Fontbonne University were Victor Wang and Tim Liddy, both men are highly accomplished artists.

Mrs. Loos values education, both as an instructor and as a continual student. Upon completing her Master of Fine Arts Degree from Fontbonne University, Cathy earned a Certificate of Proficiency in Digital Fine Art from St. Louis Community College at Meramec. Professor John Nagel, a well-known and innovative photographer, was her primary instructor.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT
My thoughts and visions are rapid. Sometimes, I cannot grasp them until I begin to paint. When I do not control, amazing images appear. The painting process releases delightful glimpses to a hidden reality.

My working style requires experimentation with a broad spectrum of mixed media. I let the material lead me and influence the outcome of my pieces. As my work matures, I usually seek to increase texture by adding additional layers of paint and other materials.

I often take a dynamic approach to creating my paintings. I use rapid mark making to release my energy, thinking of expansion and compression and the great beyond.

I am greatly impressed with the ancient cave paintings. They prove human beings have great sensitivity and artistic skill. I imitate the old images painted on those dark cave walls, but I also interpret and produce my own. I use my images to explore the “unknown,” presenting complicated questions through visual and textural applications of diverse materials.
