Anita Wendell began making baskets with her husband in 1985 as a hobby in retirement and as an activity they would do together. They quickly developed a style of weaving that not only added strength to their baskets but maintained a traditional and lasting appearance. They started showing at local craft shows but soon were displaying at the largest shows. Their work has earned numerous awards including two first place honors at the Tilles Park Craft Show. A large part of Anitas work is custom designed baskets that incorporate the individual specification and requirements of her customers. She has maintained a long standing relationship with her customers and enjoys hearing the many ways they use her baskets. Styles range from small mini baskets to large storage baskets. Each basket is hand woven and incorporates decorative weaving not only in the body of the basket but also on the handles. The combination of flat reed with twilling and the use of sea grass gives her baskets a unique style. The additional bottom weaving not only adds beauty but is designed to add strength. Many of the baskets include hardwood removable bottoms that add stability and durability. Anita maintains a show room in her home and will be showing at several local craft shows this coming year. Her web site is near completion and she will be showing at the Silver Dollar City Craft festival in September.
