At Bear Creek Paperworks, Leandra Spangler creates contemporary vessels using handmade paper. She has designed a line of decorative bowls; lamps; sculpture for the wall and markets her self published Paper Doll Book. I first plunged my hands into a vat of pulp in 1987. Since that time, I've explored the many possibilities of paper as a medium for creating my art. It can be used as a support medium for the mark maker (drawing, painting and printmaking) but can also be formed to stand on its own (both literally and figuratively). I am intrigued by it's versatility. By using a long plant fiber, thin, translucent sheets great for making lamp shades) or a short plant fiber to create sheets which take impressions or can be cast. “I am intrigued by the way light falls on a surface creating highlights and subtle variations of shadow. I am especially interested in the ability of a wet sheet of newly formed paper to take and hold the textures of impressed found objects. The vessel form is an armature (support structure) to which my handmade paper is attached. I use the basketry technique of twining round reed to create simple, classical vessel forms. Several years ago I became fascinated by illuminating translucent handmade paper. I have designed a series of handmade paper shapes for accent lamps. Each sheet of handmade paper I pull is different from the one before; each lamp is different than its neighbor. Bear Creek
