Brawley Creek PhotographyJohn Hess has been active in large format photography for more than 35 years. Influenced by Edward Weston, Ansel Adams and Eliot Porter, his subjects are occasionally scenic, but more often they are close-up or even microscopic views, of the commonplace. He holds a PhD in Zoology and is Emeritus Professor of Biology at Central Missouri State University. Dr. Hess has exhibited occasionally in the Art Center Gallery at the university, and has served as President of the Prairie Chapter of the Biological Photographic Association. In 2000 he placed two images in the "Missouri 50" (the top 50 places in the professional division) and again in 2003. He has exhibited his work elsewhere, most recently in a solo show "Natural Rhythms Stilled," at the Erdman Gallery of Princeton Theological Seminary, and at the Lawrence Arts Center in Lawrence, Kansas. In conjunction with the Princeton exhibit, Dr. Hess was interviewed by the Princeton Packet. Following his retirement from full-time teaching, he has devoted more time to photography and the pleasure of running Brawley Creek Lodge and Natural Area with wife Regina.
