Duncan Designs Process fascinates me. I study it, I tweak it, I mess. Silver granules become wire, wire is bought and wound around mandrels, tubes are cut, rings slightly open become the bases of woven jewelry gathering patterns from ancient to invented ones. Welcome to my world of jump rings. I always need a creative process. Five years ago, I finally took a class to learn the Byzantine weave. Having messed with jewelry in the past, this process opened up a whole new realm: an inspiring one. Elementary teacher by day, I often come home with the need to keep doing something with my hands. Sometimes the repetitive process of making chain by linking jump ring to jump ring is what I crave, and other times it’s great to start from scratch and invent. Wanting to give my students lots of choices, I also felt the same need in jewelry. I worked for eight months to introduce a line called Attachables. One chain is able to be attached to different Inserts which can range from semi-precious stones to pearls to shells for a different necklace each time. As an artist, the beauty of Attachables is that they also take me from the world of silver and beg for me to buy other non-traditional materials such as meteorite or sea urchin spines. Just like my jump rings, life is circular and things come and go. It’s fun to study ancient techniques that have been around since the Middle Ages. I will ask a customer if they have worn chain maille, and when they say “no,” I drape a bracelet over their arm and exclaim that I can see why the knights wore it - it is fluid and moves with you, jump ring by jump ring.
