My name is Katherine Ehlmann and I am a Surface Design Artist specializing in silk scarves.
The techniques I use for shibori are as follows, fabric is wrapped and tied around a rope, chain, pole, or clamped with wooden blocks. Color is added with MX reactive Dyes, or discharged with Thiox to create patterns. Mono printing is done by painting thickened dye on plexi glass then removing, or not, some of the dye to create a design. This is then printed on the fabric, and the process repeated until all the fabric is covered. Water color effect is achieved by painting dye on silk and letting colors blend naturally. Most pieces have a layering of several different techniques creating texture and pattern. These are a truly one of a kind treasure. I call the silk scarf division of my of my surface design business, Butterfly Wings. The name is inspired by the metamorphous of seamstress to artist. Beautiful color on flowing fabrics reminiscent of butterflies floating on the wind. “Just living is not enough” said the butterfly, “One must have sunshine, freedom, and a little flower”
