M.J. Goerke I have been working in the book format for several years. It came along what I considered, a natural route in my work. The path: "one thing leads to another!" When I began writing poetry into the constructions I had been doing, the book seemed a logical extension. I began by taking classes in book arts and my path continues. Often a book will accompany a construction so it seems difficult to separate the two. I have used all the mediums at hand in the book format: collage, watercolor, print making, drawing, photography, sculpture, whatever it takes to complete the form. I generally make a single book, but have done a series, when warranted. All books are my own design but some are some based on existing formats. My latest endeavor is to box the book, with compartments to contain objects pertaining to the text. This is a possible return to assemblage. I am doing more work using printmaking techniques. My work is generally based on "statements": theme oriented, and the poem is a verbal clue to the work. The purpose of the objects is to enhance the imagery. I am a gleaner, I gather objects constantly, picking up small things and storing them for future use. My studio sometimes looks like a biology lab with all the pods, cones, bones, flotsam and jetsam, old labels, stamps, letters, postcards, pictures all stored in labeled boxes on my shelves. In this disposable society there certainly is a lot to choose from, and so much to save and so little time to do it all. M.J. Goerke
