Jim Howe - Nature's Beauty in Wood

I have been a wood worker all of my adult life and have always had a shop in my home. For many years most of my work was designing and building furniture and other projects.

Jim Howe - Nature's Beauty in WoodAbout 15 years ago I decided that I wanted to try a different medium. I had worked on a lathe before and decided to try it again. After discovering green wood and burls make for very interesting pieces, I began studying the art of wood turning.

I read a lot, and attended seminars and demonstrations, but most of my training has been self taught, trial and error. A lot of my work ended up as decorative fire wood for my wood stove. However, that does not often happen now.

A lot of the wood I use comes from trees that are taken down for construction and from storm damage. I also purchase burls from the west coast and exotic wood from South America and Australia. It's very exciting to turn a piece of wood and discover the hidden beauty beneath the surface. The most rewarding, and challenging part of this art form is to shape the piece in the best possible way to show its true beauty.

All of my turnings and sculptures are one of a kind and sold in art galleries in the area.
