Kitty Chrysalis, is a self-taught weaver who lives in the Missouri Ozarks. She was introduced to basket weaving in the mid-1970's, by her friend, blacksmith Bob Patrick. Like basketweavers the world over, she used the materials at hand. For a time she wove mainly from honeysuckle, then began experimenting with a wide range of natural and synthetic fibers. She also explored a variety of weaving techniques and stitches. Chrysalis worked for a time as an electrician's helper, and being a natural packrat, she collected a stockpile of salvaged electrical wire. In the mid 90's father gave her some scrap telephone wire, and she realized that she could merge the two types of wire into a very versatile weaving medium. Since then she has developed a style of combined weaving techniques to create unique sculptural baskets. She learned the process of lampworking in order to make matched beads to augment her pieces. Though her work is non-traditional, craftsmanship is still an important element of her weaving. She strives to work with the utmost skill, to create pieces that are durable and finely detailed. Her work has been juried into several national and international exhibitions in the past few years. "I create my baskets because of the joy they provide," says Chrysalis. "I have been given a gift to make objects that are beautiful and unusual, and I feel honored to bring them into the world. They are my attempt to turn waste into something of beauty. I hope that my baskets bring as much joy to others as their creation has provided me, and I hope they will inspire others to transform the ordinary." Kitty
