Valerie Doran Bashaw

Valerie was born and has lived most of her life in the Kansas City area. An intrepid traveler, born of an Eastern European mother, she is rarely bored and loves to meet peoples of other cultures. Her teaching often reflects this multicultural approach. She discovered tie dye and macramé while in high school; soon every available cloth in her home was blossoming with brilliant sunburst patterns! With the medium of Fiber she found a way to work with texture and color, using her hands and mind, it was a good fit.

She attended Johnson County Community College, taking many art classes and then studied at the Kansas City Art Institute, receiving a Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts. She then set up a studio and created and showed her work all over the Kansas City area for ten years. She returned to school at the University of Michigan and received her Master Degree in Fine Arts, both degrees are in Fiber. Valerie taught at Michigan and at Central Missouri State University. Since 1993, she has taught as a freelance artist and for the Kansas City Chapter of Young Audiences, as an Artist-In-Residence. She also teaches private classes, adult enrichment programs, works with special students, and teaches summer school at the Barstow School in Kansas City, Missouri. She loves being an artist and educator, helping others to find joy in creating and learning and developing.

She is currently refocusing her life on being a studio artist. She is currently designing hand painted and dyed silk scarves, collaged greeting cards and pieced, quilted fabric. She is doing several outdoor shows and finding other venues for her work. Life is grand!
